Augustine, a first-century Church Father prayed, "Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know thee."1 The more we see our true self and how God wired us, the more we appreciate the marvelous ways of God and know more about Him. Transformational leaders know themselves well, discovering their giftings and developing them to their highest potential. Truly seeing your gifts involves mining to the inner core to expose the richest pearls.
One way to perceive your gifts in action is to notice your energy levels. When you operate in your true created gifts, you sense greater energy and vitality. You could do it for hours and still feel energized, even though physically tired. Energizing activities are a clue to knowing your God-given gifts, while draining activities indicate that you may be operating outside of your giftings. Keep a gift journal, noting what energizes you and what drains you.
A number of profiles and assessments are available to help you see your gifts and strengths. Spiritual gift assessments are easily found online. In addition, discover how the Lord created your brain to think through the gift profile found in Dr. Caroline Leaf's book, The Gift in You. The VIA Strengths Profile can be taken online at www.viacharacter.org, which reveals your character strengths and gifts. StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath assesses talents and skills in the workplace.
Taking assessments and keeping a journal are only a first step. The second and most valuable step ponders and processes the assessment findings with a leadership coach. Coaching will help you find new takeaways and help you see how to best utilize your gifts. Once you see and understand your gifts, your potential expounds as you use your gifts optimally and move forward toward God's purposes.
Your true giftings are beautiful displays of the Lord's splendor intended to be used for His kingdom purposes. They are God's hand-written signature on your life. Stand in awe of what the Lord has made as you see the marvelous gifts He created in you and use them fully for His glory.
